Why do artists find landscape so fascinating?

Throughout history artists from across the world have been both fascinated with and inspired by landscape in some form, and I am no exception. When producing an abstract landscape I start with the sketch book, painting in a figurative style, returning many times to the same scene to fully appreciate its geometry, and my perseverance leads me to the core of the subject.
